Identifying with the team

With the World Cup well under way, it is fascinating to witness participating nations getting behind ‘their’ teams.  In seems that in victory and defeat there is a common understanding and appreciation that goes deep into our psyche. However, this allegiance and loyalty only works when there is a clearly defined competition, one team against another.  Wouldn’t it be great if, in our organizations, a similar allegiance could be achieved for a project team delivering internal projects? Just imagine how effective and powerful the team could be. It is the role of the Change Manager to try and ensure that [...]

Articulate young adults

Yesterday in Tallahassee several young adults voiced their opinions over the recent mass shootings in the US.  I listened in live on the BBC World service. What surprised me most was the breadth and depth of their arguments. Emotionally charged, as one would expect from people who have just seen several of their classmates gunned down, but eloquent; concise and challenging all the arguments that their opponents might fire at them.  It was a masterclass in anticipation of contrary arguments and winning them, not just emotionally but on the interpretation of the law and scientifically too However, as any experienced [...]

The meaning of urgent

Anyone who’s had the fortune (or misfortune, depending how you look at it) of working with me knows that I cannot stand the use of the acronym ASAP (as soon as possible). I hate it because it leaves the recipient to decide when a task should be delivered.  “I could possibly deliver it after I have completed all my other tasks, not sure exactly when that will be”.  Whereas the word ‘Urgent’ has a definition all of its own. Urgent, according to the Shorter Oxford Dictionary, is an old French word coming from the latin ‘urgere’, meaning ‘demanding or requiring [...]

Working in a virtual team?

Do you work as  part of a virtual team? Do you find it a challenge to keep your team motivated, engaged and focused? If so,  you might be interested to read some tips gathered from 40 experienced project professionals. Last Friday, I had the pleasure to facilitate a workshop about virtual teams at the annual PMI Fair (Project Management  Institute)   in Belgium. The findings were both informative and enlightening. But firstly, did you ever count the  years you have been working in a virtual team? Chances are it’s less  than 10. So perhaps it’s  comforting to consider that we are [...]
