Back in time

While this week Astronomers from Arizona State University have discovered a signal from the very first stars to appear in the universe, just a blink at 180M years after the big bang, I found myself coincidentally looking back to the beginning of my solo career as a freelance in Belgium.  What drove me to taking the leap? What were the circumstances surrounding the ‘big decision’?  And then I realised that I was not going back far enough, for it is not circumstances at the time of the decision that give me the information I needed to move forward but the [...]

I don’t like Freelancers

To put it in perspective, I don’t like the term “Freelance”. Too many people incorrectly interpret this as “a not-loyal job-hopper that will leave as soon as a better offer pops up.” I much more prefer the term “Independent Contractor.” Contrary to what is thought, a Contractor needs to have a very high level of loyalty towards the customer. Driving home for Christmas

With many of us driving home for the holiday season, or at least preparing for our family days, I wonder what your piece of personal news is for this year? I ask because looking back on our  achievements is not always that easy and we often only think about them in a blind panic when someone asks us “tell me, what did you do this year?” The rush of our daily lives tends to smooth over our successes, gently eroding them to little more than ripples in the sand. But take time to turn around and you will see them, [...]

Extraordinary

There can be no doubt that that there are extraordinarily talented people among us. People that have all the attributes that you might want in any single human being. And if this means that the most of us are ‘ordinary’ (otherwise the word would be meaningless) it goes without saying that we can still do extraordinary things, either individually or as a group. However, billions of man-hours are wasted each year in large companies by employees simply not communicating effectively with each other. Silo thinking and silo working are still the biggest curse for our businesses today and it needs [...]

The Fool

I am not turning into Mystic Meg but I do believe that some of the things that we might think of as new like, ‘leaving our comfort zone’ are just modern ways of expressing aspects of our lives that have been around since the beginning of time. Take for example ‘The Fool’ from the Tarot, which dates back to the early 15th. century. The card depicts an extremely powerful image of periods of our lives that all of us have to go through. Today my father-in-law is moving into an old people’s home, it’s a giant step after living his [...]
