The best job ever!

It’s been several weeks since my last blog. This has been partly due to over work but also for personal reasons, with my attention focused inwards and elsewhere. Last Saturday, my company, The Bayard Partnership had the great privilege to organise and sponsor the fourth ‘Young Belgian Talent’, classical music finals in Brussels.  As always, we had five amazing finalists, a packed audience, incredible music, and lots of fun.  The format is always the same, each musician is welcomed on stage after we have shown a video interview of them, telling something of who they are, and why they choose [...]

Detecting real talent

With the intake of new trainees each year, it can be difficult to choose the best, who really has it and who doesn’t?  I used to have a point grading system, where I and the team applied scores to various attributes and characteristics. However, last Saturday, I was privileged to sit in on the auditions of sixteen young musicians, they were competing for a place in the final of a national competition.  The standard was so high, that in any other year, probably any one of them could have been chosen.  So, with only five going through, I thought the [...]

Where are you right now?

Ambition can be a blessing, forever pushing one on to higher ground. But it can also be a curse, the constant striving to reach the next goal can sometimes mean that we do not fully appreciate where we are. Here’s a story to illustrate what I mean. A man in his mid-forties was going through a tough time at work and at home, so he decided to take a few weeks off to embark on a solo cycling trip from Brussels to Santiago di Compostela. He cycled the length of France, and headed into northern Spain, all was going fine. [...]

Back in time

While this week Astronomers from Arizona State University have discovered a signal from the very first stars to appear in the universe, just a blink at 180M years after the big bang, I found myself coincidentally looking back to the beginning of my solo career as a freelance in Belgium.  What drove me to taking the leap? What were the circumstances surrounding the ‘big decision’?  And then I realised that I was not going back far enough, for it is not circumstances at the time of the decision that give me the information I needed to move forward but the [...]

I don’t like Freelancers

To put it in perspective, I don’t like the term “Freelance”. Too many people incorrectly interpret this as “a not-loyal job-hopper that will leave as soon as a better offer pops up.” I much more prefer the term “Independent Contractor.” Contrary to what is thought, a Contractor needs to have a very high level of loyalty towards the customer. The Contractor is there to solve a specific problem and needs to deliver the highest quality possible. In case of any lapse in performance, the assignment can quickly be terminated. This is not usually the case with employee contracts in most [...]
