Career options & backup plans

Every day I meet someone who is going through a big career change.  Some are doing so out of their own choice, as part of a ‘big plan’ while others are doing so out of necessity due to an imposed change. Having once thought it was for life, the corporates they once worked for have new plans which don’t include them.  Their profiles no longer fitting or in the wrong geographic location. Where to next?

I am not sure if it is coincidence but recently I have been spending quite a bit of time with people that are confronted by this question. Perhaps in a way we all are? I came across it recently as the header question from the Microsoft ‘Edge’ web browser. Where to next? is working on several levels for me: To move away from Microsoft Edge – it’s horrid! To reflect on how I choose to spend my waking hours for the next three months To reflect on why so many people find this such a difficult question to answer! In [...]

Peter’s story

Peter left school in 1948. Since the age of eleven he had been written off by the education establishment as boy with below average abilities. On his last day his science teacher asked him what he wanted to do with his life, young Peter said “I want to be a scientist.” His science teacher, unashamedly laughed in his face. Once he finally stopped his science teacher said “forget it, you don’t even have any qualifications!” Peter started his working life in a printing factory. A year or two later, Peter read an article in a newspaper about a business designing [...]
